About the New York State Homeowner Assistance Fund

The New York State Homeowner Assistance Fund (NYS HAF) is a federally funded program dedicated to assisting homeowners who are at risk of default, foreclosure, or displacement because of a financial hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NYS HAF program is administered by the New York State government’s affordable housing agency, NYS Homes & Community Renewal (HCR), in partnership with a non-profit, Sustainable Neighborhoods, an organization dedicated to foreclosure prevention and homeownership preservation.

The NYS HAF will provide homeowners who were affected by COVID-19 with several types of support:

  • Financial support to address delinquent housing payments that result in an affordable outcome.

  • Access to a Call Center and case managers who can help you find out about any mortgage relief you may be entitled to and how it will affect your future housing payments.

  • And referrals to professional housing counselors or legal service providers who are experts in this field.

  • Assistance will go toward homeowners in New York State who were financially affected by COVID-19 and who are now behind on their housing payments.

Types of homeowners who may apply include:

  • Homeowners who are behind or in forbearance on their mortgage, including seniors who are in default on a reverse mortgage.

  • Homeowners who are behind on their property taxes, water or sewage bills.

  • Homeowners who live in a coop or condo and are behind on monthly maintenance charges.

  • And homeowners of manufactured homes who are behind on their chattel loans, retail installment contracts or other types of home purchase loans, as well as monthly lot rent payments.

Ultimately, the NYS HAF aims to help homeowners hurt financially by the pandemic stay in their homes.
